My syrup pump will not stop running

A gas-driven syrup pump should work while it is moving syrup and then slow or stop when the demand ends. Endless clicking is usually a clue that it cannot build the product pressure it needs.

START WITH THE SYMPTOM

First, narrow it down

Identify the pump that is cycling and which carton it serves. Does it stop if nobody pours that flavor, or does it keep clicking?

What to check

01

Check for an exhausted syrup bag

The most common cause is an empty bag. The cardboard carton may still look normal. Lift the flap, check the bag, and change the syrup when empty.

02

Reseat the right connector

A loose bag fitting can pull air into the product inlet. Detach and reconnect the coupling using its release mechanism; wipe up syrup and look for a cracked fitting or damaged O-ring.

03

Inspect the syrup path

Look for a pinched inlet, syrup puddle under the rack, a split hose, or a bad tube connection. Syrup coming out around a fitting can also mean air gets in when the pump draws.

04

Listen for the difference between constant running and normal use

If the clicking stops when the system sits idle but runs when employees pour drinks, that can be normal. Continuous rapid cycling with the gun untouched is the symptom to report.

05

Prevent needless gas use

A pump that will not stop can waste CO₂. Carbonator’s original sheet suggests disconnecting its gas line after the basic checks. Gas-line disconnection should be performed only by staff trained on that exact quick-connect system; otherwise use a clearly labeled, approved pump isolation valve or call for service.

06

Note whether the pump still delivers syrup

Running with no flow points toward an empty bag, suction leak, or pump fault. Running with syrup flow but failing to stop can indicate a pump check-valve or automatic shutoff problem.

Why it happens

Gas-driven Flojet-style pumps use automatic shutoff and check valves. A faulty inlet connection or shutoff can leave a pump cycling when the bag is empty.

WHEN TO CALL CARBONATOR

Need service?

If changing the box and reseating the fitting do not stop constant cycling, isolate the affected pump only using your approved procedure and request service.
