Water pours, but there is no syrup

Water with no flavor usually means syrup is not reaching the gun or fountain valve. Start at the syrup rack before assuming the dispenser is broken.

START WITH THE SYMPTOM

First, narrow it down

Try a second flavor. If one is missing, follow that box and line. If every flavor is missing, look for a shared pump-gas or equipment problem.

WORK THROUGH IT

What to check

01

Find the correct box and check the bag

Read the flavor on the carton, not just the rack position. An apparently heavy box can hold a nearly empty collapsed bag. Replace it with an in-date box of the same product if needed.

02

Inspect the quick connector

The connector should be fully seated on the bag fitment. With clean hands, disconnect and reconnect it by its normal procedure. Check for sticky residue, split plastic, or a damaged seal; do not force the wrong type of fitting.

03

Trace visible syrup tubing

Make sure a carton, rack shelf, or delivery crate is not pinching the tube. Look for syrup drips near fittings and the pump inlet.

04

Listen to the matching pump while someone briefly requests that flavor

A gas-operated BIB pump normally cycles during syrup demand. If it stays silent, there may be no pump gas, a stopped pump, or an obstruction. If it chatters constantly, check for an empty bag or air entering at the fitting.

05

Read the syrup-pump gas gauge if your rack has one

Carbonator’s soda-system sheet cites 50–65 psi on its 0–100 psi syrup-pump regulator. Treat that as a reference for that setup, not a universal adjustment instruction. If your labeled normal range differs or the gauge is low, record the reading for service; do not turn the regulator.

06

Check shared supply problems

If every syrup pump stopped, check whether the normal CO₂ supply valve is open and whether the rack equipment has power. Carbonator’s field notes also call for proper cold-plate ice coverage; cold syrup/water does not by itself fix a pump supply failure.

Why it happens

A bag-in-box pump needs both a reliable syrup inlet and its specified drive-gas supply. A disconnected fitting and a genuinely empty bag can produce almost identical symptoms.
